Self-Isolation (Day 11)

March 25, 2020

It’s Wednesday – not that it matters – but Thia, my 7-year-old, had her first class meeting via Zoom today. I’d say she was almost surprised to see her classmates live online. I mean, yes the kids understand the concept of live-videos because they’ve previously Skyped and FaceTimed grandparents and cousins. However, they’ve linked that kind of interaction with long-distance relationships. Hence, meeting the teacher and classmates online felt weird. It confirmed a new reality, and altered their understanding of this “vacation” that we’ve been on. The worksheets and games we’ve been playing online didn’t convey this new reality of social distancing like the Zoom meeting did.

The first grade meeting itself was very simple, and the kids just talked about what they’ve been doing at home and things that have made them happy in the last few days. It was a smooth intro to the technology and class setting.

Once the virtual meeting was over, I had the kids get into pool mode. After all, the weather is getting warmer and this is one of the best ways to get them moving and to give me some time to relax. Relax in terms of have some quiet around the house. “No fighting in the pool. If you fight – you’ll have to get out.” So of course they are on their best behavior in there.

We even got little Christian in with his siblings. He absolutely loved it. Sat in his floater for a whole hour, intently observing the acrobats his siblings were pulling off.
