Chilling Out

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

I cannot say that we are self-isolated anymore. If we were, it would be days 47 – 51

May 1 – 5, 2020

We saw a lot of people over the weekend. I know it sounds irresponsible but everyone needed a break. Our small social circle has been practicing self- quarantine/ social distancing and almost everyone has been working from home. The two that aren’t working from home, are taking safety and health precautions pretty seriously.

On Friday, our self-quarantined neighbor came over with her three kids for pool fun. This is one of my favorite activities during this quarantine. The pool kills the deadliest viruses like “nagging,” “whining,” and “fighting.”

On Saturday we invited a couple of families over for a BBQ, outdoor games, and splashing around in the pool. Kids absolutely loved the “ice-cream bar” that one mum brought over and set-up for us. Everyone was covered in marshmallows and sprinkles by the end of the day.

Yes, she is wearing a costume over her swimsuit. Don’t ask.

On Sunday, we again seized the good weather and spent the whole day in the pool as a family. At around 6pm we gathered in a public park, for an hour, to celebrate a friend’s birthday. No worries – each family stood 6 feet apart. There were no handshakes or hugs, but there was a lot of loud conversation and laughter 😄

As of this week, Texas is no longer on lock-down. The growth in coronavirus cases has started to relatively slow down and the government believes it’s time to save the oil and gas industry. For Harris county (Houston) this means many will go back to work, physically, including some of our friends. More stores will reopen for curbside pick-up this week as well. Schools will remain closed though. Thank God?

To date, Texas has had some 34,000 confirmed cases and close to 1,000 total deaths.

Is reopening the state wise? I don’t know. Will life in Houston go back to normal? “Normal” will probably look different for a while.

  1. Masks are now mandated in public spaces.

  2. Many businesses are only open for curbside pick-up.

  3. Many grocery stores have a limit on the number of people allowed inside at once.

  4. Gyms will remain closed for a while.

  5. And vacations…well that’s a whole other story!

And we will continue to wash hands like crazy, use hand sanitizer, avoid ride sharing services, and disinfect groceries and other items that could have been touched by others.

So, for now, let’s just chill! Cheers 🥂
