Baking Cookies with Kouka

This time last year, I was baking cookies with my (then) 6-year-old cousin. I wasn't able to leave Boston this holiday season because I'm 7 months pregnant, but I can reminisce.

God I miss that little girl! She’s the sweetest chatty cartoon character. She’s planning on being a big sister to my baby on the way, which I think is adorable! She’s already thinking about all the games they’re going to play together, and she’s decided on which toys she’ll be donating to her…I could just eat her up!

Just look how angry she got at me when we were baking Christmas cookies for Santa! I wouldn’t let her crack the eggs into the bowl because I was afraid my mum would throw us BOTH out of the kitchen if we made a mess. Kouka kept protesting, insisting that she is a ‘big girl’ and that she can do it. She reminded me of myself as a kid, except back then, my dad would have let me crack the eggs anyway and then bore the scolding my mum would give us both for making a mess! hahaha

At the end of the day, we both made a core memory and had fun! The cookies were delicious…mainly because we didn’t make them from scratch! haha We’d never baked together before, so I thought to better play it safe and get a ready-made mixture by Betty Crocker.

I know – they don’t look very professional! haha but yummy!

I must say I learnt a lot that day. First of all, I had no idea a 6-year-old could have so many questions about something as simple as baking cookies – and that I had to give one answer or another. “I don’t know” does not cut it with kids.

Second of all, I found out how I act when I cook something yummy, just by observing her. “Did you try my cookies?”

“I made them myself!”

“You have to try my cookies!”

“Here, have a cookie”

“What do you mean you don’t want one? HAVE a cookie!”

“OMG! What happened to all the cookies?!” “Who ate all the cookies?”
